Each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. That comes out to over one million per minute. Billions end up as litter each year. All of these "free" bags ultimately cost both consumers and the environment plenty:
Each year billions of bags end up as ugly litter.
Eventually they break down into tiny toxic bits polluting our soil, rivers, lakes and oceans.
Production requires vast amounts of oil.
Countless animals needlessly die each year.
Many grocery stores and farmer's markets are now offering reusable bags as an alternative to the plastic bags we've become so accustomed to. I recently made the switch and I urge others to do the same. After I started using reusable bags I realized many benefits in addition to helping save our environment.
Reusable bags are stronger than paper/plastic, so you don't end up with ripped bags and groceries spilling out onto the floor.
Many varieties of reusable bags have a flat bottom, your groceries no longer roll around in your trunk as soon as you accelerate the car.
Reusable bags hold a lot more groceries than your standard plastic bag. As a result, you end up making fewer trips emptying them from your car.
Lastly, you just feel good about doing what you know is right...
