One of the most important steps to a successful meal is using quality ingredients. Equally important is using fresh ingredients. Here are some tips to keeping your produce its freshest.
Store leafy vegetables in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator, wrapped
in a damp dish towel.
Herbs will last longer in the refrigerator if you
remove them from the grocery produce bag, wrap them in a paper towel, put them back into the plastic bag and store in your crisper drawer.
Fresh mushrooms need to be stored in paper or muslin bags to allow them
to breathe. They will last longer, and won't develop a slimy coating. Note: using this method the mushrooms will eventually dehydrate and become hard.
Potatoes and onions should always be stored in a dark cool location, such
as the bottom of a well-ventilated pantry. Keep them in an uncrowded basket with large holes and raised feet.
Tomatoes should never be stored in the
refrigerator, as this will stop the ripening process. Store them as you would other
fruit, in an uncrowded bowl in a cool location. They won't keep as long as in the refrigerator, but your tomatoes will be ripe and flavorful.
